Boarding School On The Cheap?

The words boarding school and affordable seem contradictory, don't they? The truth is that a large number of students today receive financial aid.

To begin, check with the school's business or admissions office to see what is availabe. There are merit based and need based scholarships in most schools. Merit scholarships focus on grades and need based scholarships take into account the parents' income.

Scholarships may not cover the entire cost of your child's education. The past fifteen years have seen the emergence of private education loans. While these may be a better option than using high interest credit cards, research them carefully. You want to check repayment schedules, APR, and interest rates. Some of these loans are credit based so your credit score will be a determining factor.

Private boarding school tuition runs an average of thirty thousand dollars a year in the United States. In the United Kingdom, there are state boarding schools where only dormitory fees are charged. People who work abroad are able to take advantage of these.

If going to England seems out of reach, there is a school in Oregon with a unique approach. Mitchell, Oregon has a population of 185. In order to keep it's high school open, it became a boarding school in 1992. By taking in students from afar and giving them a taste of rural life, this little school is able to keep its teachers employed. It receives state funding for every student enrolled, and there is a waiting list. No surprise there. The school is co-ed with boys and girls housed in trailers separated by a dining room and tv area. Other schools are taking a cue and providing dorms for students who want to avoid long rides from area ranches.

With some research, you may be able to find a school that suits your needs perfectly.
